“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy and blameless. So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies.”

- Ephesians 5:25-28 -

It is crucial to look to Scripture to define the roles God designed for our marriages. Some of the things Scripture says won’t be what you hear from the world, on television, or from your friends. But God created marriage. It is His institution, and He sets the rules. And the first thing He tells men to do is to love their wives. You might think this goes without saying, but our world has so devalued love that we must emphasize it in our marriages.

People say, “I love my job. I love my house. I love chocolate cake.” Generally, what they mean is they love what those things do for them. But when the Bible talks about love, it defines love as the sacrifice you make for the betterment of someone else.

To say that a man loves his wife is to say that he makes sacrifices for her. Ephesians 5:25 says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” To talk about love is to talk about the cross of Calvary and the sacrifice of our Savior. Jesus didn’t die for us because we were lovable; Jesus died for us to make us lovable. Christ's example is to be our example on how to initiate love in our relationships.

For His kingdom,
